Privacy Policy

The short version

Outspoken transcribes your voice, rewrites the transcript, translates it, and stores your history entirely on your own device. Your audio and transcript text are never uploaded anywhere. We collect a small amount of anonymous usage metadata to help us improve the app — never the words you say or type.

Audio and transcripts

When you dictate, your microphone audio is processed on-device by whichever transcription engine you've chosen — Apple's built-in Speech framework, Parakeet, or Whisper — all of which run as local models on your Mac or iPhone. That audio is never sent to us or to any server. If you turn on rewriting or translation, that also happens on-device, using Apple's on-device Foundation Models framework or a local MLX model you've downloaded — again, no network request, no server. Your dictation history is stored locally (in Application Support on Mac, or in your device's app storage on iPhone) and is never synced to iCloud or to us.

Usage analytics

Outspoken uses TelemetryDeck to understand how the app is used and to catch bugs. These events carry only metadata — things like which engine you used, a word or character count (not the words themselves), how long a dictation took, which settings are enabled, and error codes if something goes wrong. No transcript text and no audio is ever included in an analytics event. Analytics is on by default, and you can turn it off entirely in Settings at any time.

Permissions

On the Mac, Outspoken asks for exactly one permission: Microphone access, so it can hear you. It doesn't ask for Accessibility and can't type into other apps — it copies each transcript straight to your clipboard, ready for ⌘V wherever you need it. On iPhone, Outspoken asks for Microphone access, and the Outspoken keyboard needs “Allow Full Access” so it can hand dictation to the main app and place the finished text at your cursor. None of these grants us remote access to anything.

What we don't do

We don't have user accounts or logins. We don't run ads. We don't sell your data. The only third parties involved are TelemetryDeck, which receives the anonymous usage counts described above, and RevenueCat, which handles in-app purchases — neither ever sees your audio or your transcripts. Those stay on your device.

Children's privacy

Outspoken is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we'll update this page. Continued use of Outspoken after a change means you accept the update.
